About Equality Arizona

Equality Arizona is a statewide political advocacy organization, working at the state capitol and in communities across Arizona to advance lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality.

Mission: It is the mission of Equality Arizona to secure, protect and defend the rights and welfare of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Arizona.

We have successfully advocated for:

  • Then-Governor Janet Napolitano’s Executive Order protecting state employees from workplace discrimination
  • Recognition of domestic partnerships in the City of Phoenix
  • A comprehensive civil rights ordinance in Scottsdale protecting city employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Healthcare and family benefits for domestic partners of state employees and their children through an administrative rule change (a legislative repeal of these benefits has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal district court and a final decision is pending)
  • Workplace non-discrimination protections based on gender identity for Phoenix city workers
  • The expansion of Arizona State University’s nondiscrimination policy to include protections based on gender identity or expression, the first Arizona state agency and fourth public university nationwide to do so.
  • The repeal of archaic laws criminalizing same-gender relationships

Equality Arizona is working to organize the movement for equality, educate voters, and influence policymakers. We continue to advocate for safe schools legislation and policies protecting students from anti-LGBT bullying, inclusive nondiscrimination and hate crimes protections statewide, and equal legal recognition of gay and lesbian couples, among other issues. Equality Arizona Foundation

The Equality Arizona Foundation is working to change hearts and minds on the state and local levels to support equality and freedom for all Arizonans. The Equality Arizona Foundation engages in educational activities and forums, research and outreach efforts, and lobbying activities to the extent permitted by law.
